Last year, John Daly almost beat (and should’ve beat) Tiger Woods at the Amex Championship at Harding Park in San Franciso. Instead, JD yipped his way to a defeat. And, now, he’s outside the top 125 (and even top 150) on the money list and fighting to keep his tour privileges alive. Mercer Baggs of TGC reports that next year Daly’s going to have to rely on sponsor’s exemptions based on his Past Champion status and popularity to play the maximum total of 7 events allowed.

Then, there’s David Duval. The story is a little better. Although outside the top 125 (and even top 150) on the money list this year, DD is among the Top 25 all time career earnings, so gets to claim an exemption next year for that and play in the full battery of events.

Neither Daly (out with hand injury) and Duval are playing this week. The Funai Disney classic will be a pressure cooker, though, for many others who are fighting to keep their full PGA tour cards, including Lee Janzen, Steve Jones, Mark O’Meara, and Bernhard Langer, all of whom are major winners (more here). Golf is a tough and, at times, cruel game.
