By now you must have heard that David Feherty made a bad joke in print in an article he wrote for D Magazine: “If you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with (U.S. House speaker) Nancy Pelosi, (U.S. Senate Majority Leader) Harry Reid and Osama bin Laden, there’s a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death.”
First of all, the joke is not even funny. But should CBS fire David Feherty for his inane remark? What say, you, dear Readers?
UPDATE: Lots of controversy. Thread moved to top. In some ways, Feherty’s written comment may be worse than Kelly Tilghman’s off the cuff, on-air joke about “lynching” Tiger Woods in a back alley. Tilghman was suspended by The Golf Channel for 2 weeks. Feherty has yet to be suspended.
UPDATE: CBS and the PGA both have rebuked David Feherty’s comments. It is not clear yet whether these public condemnations of Feherty’s comments will quell the firestorm caused by his ridiculous statement.
“We want to be clear that this column . . . is an unacceptable attempt at humour and is not in any way condoned, endorsed or approved by CBS Sports,” CBS said.
The PGA Tour said: “David Feherty is an insightful and sometimes humorous commentator . . . However, his attempt at humour in this instance went over the line, and his comments were clearly inappropriate.”
