The Golf Blog says: In a TV interview broadcast on The Golf Channel, Rocco Mediate said yesterday that Tiger Woods’ re-injury of his knee and Achilles heel is related to his new swing. And Rocco suggested it was obvious from the video the added force or stress being added to Tiger’s left knee–with Tiger ending up with more weight on his left side. Although Rocco didn’t name names, Tiger is taught now by Sean Foley. When questioned about the comments, Sean Foley dismissed them as unfounded.
So who’s right? Well, it is a bit presumptuous for Rocco to start speculating about Tiger’s medical condition. He’s not a doctor and doesn’t have a first-hand account of Tiger’s practice regimen. But perhaps Rocco does raise a legitimate question.
Tiger’s ex coach Hank Haney, in an interview with Golf Digest this past year, said that he had to change Tiger’s swing in order to avoid aggravation of the recurring knee injury. (This earlier interview, Haney says this was coincidental, but in a later one with Jaime Diaz, as we recall, he said he worked to avoid aggravating the knee.) But Sean Foley has a completely different swing philosophy and what Tiger should be doing. It would be heartbreaking — and perhaps career-ending — if Tiger is trying to “learn” a new swing, with months of practice, that ends up being worse for his knee.
On the other hand, who’s to say that Tiger’s knee won’t be susceptible to injury with any golf swing, given the nature of weight shift and torque in the golf swing?
