The Golf Blog says: Rory McIlroy missed the cut last week at the Irish Open. He’s only hit 8 rounds out of 38 rounds in the 60s (only 21%). He’s missed all 3 cuts on the European Tour tournaments he’s played. He withdrew from the Honda Classic after he was about to shoot a 40-plus front nine and then blamed it on a toothache. He was eliminated in the first round of the Match Play Championship. He’s been a nonfactor at the Masters and the U.S. Open.
At the Irish Open, Rory admitted, “Off the tee, I am missing one right and then missing one left and it’s just not going where I want it. It gets you in two minds every time you are playing a tee shot. The game is just not coming easy to me at the moment and while I was struggling at this point last year, I was able to turn the corner in the middle of the summer and have a great end to my season. I don’t know whether it’s a matter of trying to play my way out of it or just keep grinding away on the range or whatever.”
For all intents and purposes, Rory has become irrelevant this year, a non-factor in nearly all the tourneys he’s played.
We think it’s time for Rory to go back to the basics starting with his clubs. The stats don’t lie. The Nike clubs haven’t helped him this year. He needs to regroup. Pull out the old Titleist clubs and get a fresh start for the British Open.
