The NEC Invitational begins on Thursday in my home town of Akron, Ohio at Firestone Country Club. After the conclusion of the PGA Championship, the NEC Invitational field has been determined. In order to be eligible for the NEC Invitational, a player needs to be in the top 50 in the World Golf Rankings after August 8th or August 15th, or a player needs to be on the 2004 Ryder Cup team or 2005 President’s Cup team, or a player needs to win one of many selected tournaments. For a list of players eligible before the world rankings came out after the PGA, click here.
Others who made it Monday include: Steve Elkington, who after finishing T2 at the PGA, jumped from 129 to 48 in the World Golf Rankings, making him eligible; Geoff Ogilvy jumped from 52nd to 45th and became eligible for the NEC, after finishing T6 at the PGA; Trevor Immelman, who was selected by Gary Player today to play for the International President’s Cup team, needs to go out and buy Player dinner, because Player’s selection of Immelman makes Immelman eligible for the cut-less NEC Invitational.
