I was heartbroken to learn that Jean Van de Velde didn’t qualify for this week’s British Open at Carnoustie. His fellow Frenchman Gregory Havret just qualified by winning the Scottish Open. But I really wanted to see Jean back in it. Who knows? Maybe the golfing gods would have let the ball bounce his way this time.
Van de Velde’s 72nd meltdown in the last Open at Carnoustie has to be the worst collapse in the history of golf, even topping Phil Mickelson’s lame-brained final hole at the U.S. Open 2 years ago.
