Wow! If you stayed up late last night, you got a treat from the China HSBC, World Golf Championship event. Tiger Woods played uncharacteristically poorly on Sunday, going 4 over at one point for the round (he eventually got it back to even for the round, 12-under overall).
Meanwhile, a dramatic charge by Ernie Els put everyone else on notice that he’s back in old form. Ernie posted a 63 on Sunday, and he would have won the tournament or at least forced a playoff, had it not been for the steady play of Phil Mickelson, who shot a final round 69 and 17-under for the tourney. Oh, and the untimely ball in the water and bogey on 18 for Ernie didn’t help.
This is twice this late golf season that Phil Mickelson has bested Tiger Woods on Sunday–first at the finale of the Fedex Cup, and now at a WGC event. Mickelson’s defeat over Ernie Els was reminiscent of Lefty’s first Masters victory.
Bravo to the Big Three for putting on a spectacular show in China!
