The Golf Blog says: What does it mean when Phil Mickelson asks Bones Mackay to tend the pin as Phil hits a sand wedge from 75 yards away in the fairway? Well, it means Phil has the confidence that he will hole out from the fairway to make eagle and force a playoff with Bubba Watson.
Had Phil made that shot, it might have been of Babe Ruthian proportions, perhaps one of the most audacious hole outs ever. But it was not meant to be. Phil missed by a couple feet, but came very close on the fly. Wow. Gotta love that Phil!
Meanwhile, Bubba Watson played aggressively all day and shot a 67, to finish at -16. Bubba used the driver all day and was hitting bombs of over 350 yards at times — and in the fairway.
Johnatton Vegas, the rookie from Venezuela who won last win, played excellent and was in second place for most of the day. He dumped it into the water on 18 and ended up tied for 3rd. The guy is big and has a silky smooth swing. He also has swagger. Reminiscent of Tiger Woods in 1997.
