The Golf Blog says: Adam Scott was sitting in control of the British Open through 14 holes, with a 4-shot lead most of the day. But bogeys on 15, 16, 17, and 18 derailed his march to his first major. Meanwhile, Ernie Els put on a late charge and birdied the last hole to get to -7 (barely missing good lucks at birdie on 16 and 17). After Adam Scott bogeyed 17, he fell back into a tie with Ernie. Adam’s missed putts cost him dearly down the stretch.
Adam Scott then hit his 3 wood on 18 into a pot bunker and had to pitch sideways. He hit the face of the bunker and was lucky to get the ball out. He then his approach shot to 12 feet below the hole–a must make for par. While all this drama was happening, Ernie was eating a sandwich and talking to coach Claude Harmon. Waiting to hit his putt, Adam looked like he could sense the tournament slipping away, his face flushed red. Only an hour before, he had a 4 shot lead. Now he needed to hole a putt to force a playoff with Els. But Adam missed.
Feel so sorry for Adam! Congrats to the Big Easy. It’s Ernie’s 4th major, this one coming 10 years after his last major. Both Adam and Ernie are class acts, and both have worked really hard to put themselves in contention at major after struggling for many years. Ernie is the second person in a row to win a major with a belly putter.
