The Golf Blog says: Tiger Woods explained why he tried to hit the bunker shot on the 6th hole of Royal Lytham that essentially cost him the British Open. With his ball near the face of a tall pot bunker, Tiger tried to blast the ball he says into the wall and have it ricochet to the right for a more playable lie. “The game plan was to fire it into the bank, have it ricochet to the right and then have an angle to come back at it. Unfortunately it ricocheted to the left and almost hit me.” Seriously?

We find Tiger’s explanation preposterous. First, it didn’t look like he was trying to hit the wall of the bunker based on his practice swings and where he was looking (several times at the green!); instead, it looks like he was just trying to blast the ball out of the bunker. Why would Tiger make up such an explanation? It just doesn’t sound right.

Second, assuming Tiger’s ricochet explanation is true, that’s a pretty lame brained strategy. It sounds like something that Phil Mickelson might do in a moment of brain lock. Tiger could have just taken an unplayable ball in the bunker instead, if he was willing to eat 1 shot with the ricochet attempt.
