The Golf Blog says: Merion beat up the leaders all day, giving up few birdies and many bogeys. Justin Rose won his first major, with steady play and a final round 70 (even), +1 for the tourney.
Phil Mickelson (+3) finished with his 6th second place finish at the U.S. Open (tied with Jason Day). Phil had an up-and-down day, with 2 double bogeys, 3 bogeys, a hole-out eagle on 10 (that propelled Phil momentarily back into the lead at even), and 1 birdie for a disappointing 74. He missed a short birdie putt on 16 (which he needed to tie Justin Rose at +1) that would prove to be his last realistic chance at birdie. At 43 years of age, Phil may not have a better shot to win the U.S. Open again. After the round, Phil said it was his best chance to win a U.S. Open. Asked what he was feeling, Phil said” “Heartbreak.” Phil picked a bad day to have his worst round all week. He was just a little bit off all day.
Congrats, Justin!
