The Golf Blog says: Matt Kuchar did something uncharacteristic after leading the Shell Open the entire day … until the last hole. After a beautiful drive, Kuchar hit his hybrid into the water on the left, the only place he couldn’t be. “Aww, that’s in the water, golly Matty!” Kuchar said in disgust. That opened the door for Matt Jones, who had just drained a 30 footer to pull within one shot of Kuchar. But after hitting the water, Kuchar needed a five footer just to force a playoff.
The two Matts then went back to 18 for the playoff. Jones got a bad break in the bunker as his ball nestled into a devilish furrow; Jones laid up. Kuchar drove his ball in the middle of the fairway, but then, no doubt rattled by his last approach shot into the water, overcompensated and hit his ball right, into the green side bunker. Jones pitched first and proceeded to drain it for a birdie. Amazing! His first PGA Tour win and trip now to the Masters.
