The Golf Blog says: Phil Mickelson put a thrill into the first round of The Open Championship. He had 8 birdies and no bogeys to shoot a 63. But his birdie putt on the 18th hole lipped out–denying him the record low round for any major in history. Oh well. Phil is 3 shots ahead of Patrick Reed and others.
UPDATE: Phil has started round 2 and is now 11-under after 8 holes, with a 5-shot lead.
